Mercedes Schlapp, the White House communication strategist, has a challenging job. Mercedes Schlapp has a tough task as White House's Strategic Communications Advisor. She is dealing with an administration which includes the president as their own director of communications. Yet, through all of it Schlapp has stayed focused on the mission that she has been assigned, and is working closely with White House's policy and legislative affairs teams and policy shops as with the larger communications team in order to oversee policy implementations. In her current position, she has concentrated on several issues including school safety and the use of opioids. She doesn't interact with reporters at all in her current job. The issue came up in March when she gained a sudden burst attention, when it became public that her name was going to be a candidate for take over Hope Hicks's position as the director of communication. The battle has turned out to be ugly.Mercedes Schlapp doesn't get a simple job as an adviser to the White House strategic communications adviser. She must contend with a president that acts as his own communication director, multiple legal battles which could disrupt the White House's strategy for messaging as well as a host of Cabinet secretaries embroiled in controversies of their own. Schlapp never wavered from her focus, and was closely involved in conjunction with White House policy and political teams. She has focused on topics such as the safety of schools, opioids, and infrastructure as well as trade. She doesn't interact with reporters often in her current position. There was a great deal of attention from the media when she was announced as a candidate to replace Hope Hicks, the communications director. It hasn't been a pleasant fight. Friends of Schlapp and Tony Sayegh another candidate for the position, began jousting in the media. Following The Washington Examiner published a negative story about Sayegh, Schlapp said she called Sayegh to show a open heart.
